Critical Incident Support

Critical and traumatic incidents can have severe, complex and significant effects on people. These incidents can do the same to your organisation. Timely, professional interventions in times of crisis will help to minimise the level of disruption an incident may have on your organisation and its performance.

The aim of critical incident support is to minimise the effects of a traumatic incident on your staff in order to:

  • enable people to resume effective operation both at work and at home as quickly as possible
  • monitor and support individuals who may need additional help to manage post-trauma symptoms
  • provide reassurance to all staff and their families that your organisation is concerned about their wellbeing

Our Critical Incident Support service provides a full trained trauma counsellor or team to come onsite to deliver specialist counselling following complex and distressing incidents which has resulted in serious trauma being experienced by your workforce. It is an adaptive, short-term psychological helping process that focuses solely on an immediate and identifiable problem. It can include pre-incident preparedness to acute crisis management to post-crisis follow up. Its purpose is to enable people to return to their daily routine more quickly and with less likelihood of experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is designed to help people deal with trauma by allowing them to talk about the incident when it happens, without judgement or criticism.

All interventions are strictly confidential and the emphasis is always on keeping people safe and returning them quickly to more normal levels of functioning. Research demonstrates that organisations who develop support networks built around the needs of their employees, customers and community can promote recovery in the aftermath of a destabilising critical incident or traumatic event. A critical incident at work can severely impact the mental wellbeing of those directly or indirectly involved. Examples include serious accidents, sudden death or suicide, or violence such as an armed robbery or terrorist attack. We can help you implement a critical incident plan to anticipate such an event and support you in dealing with its aftermath.

Our Pre-Critical Incident Service delivers planning, awareness raising, education and training so that your organisation’s response to a critical incident is both rapid and appropriate, containing the psychological damage which those affected experience. Our Post-Critical Incident Service is available as part of our EAP or on an ad hoc basis. Our clinical advisors ensure that workers affected by a critical incident receive urgent on-site and off-site support to the highest standards, including face-to-face counselling, group therapy, telephone counselling and follow-up assessments.
